A specimen is held in a calibrated flame for the time the standard sets, then withdrawn. The material has to self-extinguish inside the limit and must not drip molten polymer.

Surface resistance is measured on the coated strand with a ring electrode. The reading has to stay below the ceiling the underground regulation sets.

One strand is pulled in a universal testing machine until it parts. Break load and elongation are recorded against the batch, not against a catalogue.
